Robert Schlant, M.D.

1929 - 2002

Dr. Robert Schlant, Co-Editor of Clinical Cardiology, died of cancer at his home in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday, December 12, 2002.

Dr. Schlant was born in El Paso, Texas, April 16, 1929, and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he graduated valedictorian of his high school class in 1945. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Vanderbilt in 1948. He then graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1951 where he was a member of AOA Medical Society. It must be emphasized that he never talked about his accomplishments or his many awards. In this respect he was a very private person.

Dr. Schlant served his internship and first year medical residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. He served two years in the Army in Korea and returned to the Brigham to finish his residency and two-year research fellowship in cardiology with the famous Lewis Dexter.

Dr. Schlant joined the Emory faculty in 1958 and was rapidly promoted to full professorship. He was appointed Director of the Division of Cardiology at Emory in 1962, a position he held until 1988.

Dr. Schlant had been Chairman of the Council of Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association, President of the Association of University Cardiologists, Chairman of numerous committees of the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association and a member of the Subspecialty Board of Cardiology. He received numerous awards for his competence as a University Cardiologist.

He taught beautifully, wrote and edited in a scholarly manner, was active in clinical research, and cared deeply for patients.

He contributed greatly to the book Hurst The Heart through seven editions and was Co-Editor along with Wayne Alexander of the eighth edition and continued with Alexander and Valentin Fuster in the ninth edition of Hurst The Heart.

Dr. Schlant was the subject of Profiles in Cardiology published in Clinical Cardiology. A more complete description of his remarkable life can be found there.
